How to approach a Professional Interview
Interview is something every one of us encounters frequently in life. It can be for a Job placement ( most often ), promotion from one rank to other rank and for study purpose at universities. In this article, we are going to highlight points for the job placement interview for medical professionals and these can be rules in general for interviews.
1 – Dress code
Your first appearance leaves a prominent effect on the interview panel. You should wear appropriate dress as per local customs and cultural values. Your dress should be properly ironed and cleaned. Your beard (if you have one) should be properly trimmed & maintained. If you don’t have one, then shave on the day of interview.
2 – Comfort level
You should keep nerves controlled in front of the interview panel. This is one of the major mistakes most of us make at the time of the interview. We panic easily and our anxiety level goes sky high. For any encounter, mental calmness is very important. In the panic state, you would make a mistake and blunder even if you are strong on the academic side. So keep yourself calm and behave confidently.
3 – Academic knowledge
Academic knowledge is one of integral part of an interview. Academic questions are related to the department you choose to work at and interviews are conducted by the department head. In the panel interview, usually 2 – 3 members are there including the department Head, other medical directors and the HR personnel.
Interview always start with the panel introduction and usually you are asked to introduce yourself. This question usually refers to your carrier. A brief summary is expected about your qualification, training and details of your experience. This is how interview goes into the professional part where the academic questions are asked as per your qualifications, training and per job requirement. Its never expected that you should answer each and every question. But it is expected that whatever you answer, you answer with confidence. as your confidence counts a lot.
2nd important point on how to deal with questions you don’t know the answers for. Replying bluntly that I don’t know it is considered a negative point. Putting wrong answer also a blunder. So handle such questions wisely.
3rd Important point is, never argue with interview panel even if you are right. Avoid arguments with interview team as finally they are boss at the time. Just apologize and thank them for correcting you.
4 – HR Personnel
Usually the HR personnel start the interview and introduce the interview panel to you. And the HR personnel or other member of the interview panel might ask you to briefly introduce yourself. At the end of the interview, the HR personnel again come into the picture and ask questions related to your expectations of financial compensation, the flexibility for financial compensation and possible date of joining if being selected.
You also need to answer them wisely on this. Never offer a fixed number for financial compensation. Always say that the package should be as per the market standards. If you have to give them a number, give them a range like 15k to 18k. Never decide about joining or not joining immediately. Try to bargain some time for your final decision for the job offer. Try to be straight with them and take time as much as you need to look over before joining.
These are some basic rules or points to take into consideration before going for an interview. Small organizations are usually not interested for academic interview and mostly are a formality, their only concern is to know your financial expectation. But well renowned organizations usually conduct a professional interview and academia is always part of the interview. Always be well prepared for interview as per the department needs and organization repute.
All the best for all professionals for future endeavours.
